Sarah Johnson

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist

Sarah Johnson is a Registered Dental Hygienist, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist, and is Certified in the Buteyko Breathing Method. She earned degrees in Human Biology from Michigan State University, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Dental Hygiene from Roane State in Tennessee, which has been awarded the ADHA’s Faculty Recognition Award two years in a row. She is also a Fellow of the World Clinical Laser Institute, and has utilized diode laser therapy and helped offices integrate hygiene laser programs into daily practice for the past 6 years. Sarah received training in the Buteyko breathing method from Patrick McKeown and attended the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy instructed by Joy Moeller and Samantha Weaver where she spent over 100 continuing education hours learning about Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders and their relationships to sleep, airway, breathing, chewing and swallowing, TMD and oral health, tethered oral tissues (frena and “tongue-tie” or ankyloglossia), and other neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and general health conditions. She also participated in an introductory course given by the IAOM with Kim Benkert as speaker.

Throughout her dental hygiene career, Sarah witnessed the negative effects of oral breathing, tongue ties, and myofunctional disorders on the health of her patients, herself, and eventually on her own daughter’s health. Traditional solutions were not always successful. It was through the educational efforts of the AOMT and the Buteyko Clinic, in combination with her physiology background, that Sarah came to realize the solution. Breathing re-education and myofunctional therapy, in harmony with treatment from other health professionals, are proven successful for a variety of problems from dental crowding and TMD to sleep apnea, asthma, and emotional distress. Her passion as a Myofunctional Therapist is to raise awareness of these logical solutions in the dental and health communities, and to simplify the treatment process for patients suffering from orofacial myofunctional related problems.

As a clinical hygienist and educator, Sarah’s goal is to enlighten the careers of dental professionals through continuing education that is thought provoking, challenging, and applicable to daily practice. She is continually learning about the latest techniques in dentistry and has experienced many different styles of practice during her career. She has practiced dental hygiene across the US for over 15 years. Having lived in many different cities, she has worked in over 15 dental offices, each having unique qualities of care and practice management styles. She enjoys helping practices grow and incorporate new methods that can improve quality of care, efficiency, patient retention, and office morale. Sarah offers on-site advising and custom CEs for your dental team, targeted to your specific needs.

On the rare occasional when she’s not working or reading about the many facets of myofunctional therapy, Sarah enjoys paddle boarding with the sea lions in Marina del Rey close to home, and hiking with her family in various mountain and urban trails around LA. She’s a foodie and cocktail snob, a caregiver and fact finder, an introvert and a lifelong learner. Many years ago, she was a competitive classical pianist, majored in piano performance and pedagogy with full scholarships, and taught piano. Though she no longer tickles the ivories, her experiences in music prepared her for the neuromuscular repatterning techniques that she now uses with her myofunctional therapy patients.

Sarah is the founder of Enlightened Hygiene, Inc., a nationally approved Academy of General Dentistry Pace Provider for continuing education in dentistry, and Myofunctional Partners, providing myofunctional therapy and Buteyko breathing re-education in both live and online settings for children and adults.
